Another Shooting of Unarmed Black Man in New York Triggers Protests

Aired March 19, 2000 - 8:33 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: New York City police are being criticized again in the shooting death of another unarmed black man. One Hundred Blacks in Law Enforcement plan to hold a news conference today to discuss the incident.

As CNN's Chris Rieker (ph) reports, the shooting triggered another protest.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED PROTESTER: You are a target for racist police terror.

CHRIS RIEKER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): A protest demonizing New York's mayor and attacking police in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man: Police are investigating how an undercover officer's gun went off, killing Patrick Dorismond. It happened Thursday outside the Wakamba Lounge just a few blocks from Times Square during what police call a drug buy and bust operation involving three Hispanic officers, Dorismond, who is black, and another man.

A scuffle began between Dorismond and one of the officers. The 26-year-old security guard was shot just once in the chest. Police did not find any drugs or contraband on him.

REV. AL SHARPTON: It is another unarmed man shot for no reason.

RIEKER: The case has thrown salt into open wounds from recent cases, including Amadou Diallo, who was unarmed when police fired 42 bullets, striking him 19 times. Eleven people died in police shootings in New York last year, another just two weeks ago. In this case, the family questions how Dorismond wound up dead by saying no to a drug deal with undercover officers. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has been quick to defend his officers.

MAYOR RUDY GIULIANI, NEW YORK: I'm sorry, police officers are entitled to the benefit of the doubt.

RIEKER: The city has drawn fire from a group of legislators for releasing Dorismond's juvenile criminal record.

REP. CHARLES RANGEL (D), NEW YORK: The idea that the police chief would demonize the victim by putting out information is tantamount of calling a rape victim a whore without having any evidence to support it.

RIEKER: New York City's police commissioner is defending the action, saying, "It's the longstanding police department policy to release the background information of officers involved in a shooting incident, such as prior shootings, as well as the relevant background information of the civilian involved, such as arrest history. The public has a right to know this information."

Meanwhile, the family and supporters are calling for a federal investigation of the case.
