Southwest Airlines Flight 1455 Skids off Runway Into L.A. Street

Aired March 5, 2000 - 10:48 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDRIA HALL, CNN ANCHOR: We have more information for you on the incident at Burbank Airport in Burbank, California. CNN has confirmed five people were injured when Southwest Airlines Flight 1455 went off the runway and skidded onto a city street.

CNN producer Tony Frassrand joins us now by telephone from Burbank with the latest.

Tony, you're on the scene. What can you tell us?

TONY FRASSRAND, CNN PRODUCER: Well, just confirming some of the things that we already do know. Southwest Airlines Flight 1455 landed from Las Vegas at 6:11 p.m. Pacific Time. It was going too fast for its landing, and officers with the Burbank police and at the airport are still not speculating as to the cause of that speed.

We know that one car on the street running parallel to the airport, which is Hollywood Way, the name of the street, one car was involved, at least one car. And also a man driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee was also involved, slightly hit by the plane as it came by, but he's fine.

We know there were 137 passengers plus five crewmembers on the plane. We understand that two passengers, two crew members and perhaps the man in the car have been taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center, nearby hospital: this all according to Officer Robert Giles (ph) with the Burbank police.

That's about all we have at this point. I talked to the couple who was driving in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and they said they looked out the window, saw smoke, and the woman in the car said, "Oh my gosh, I think we're going to be hit by a plane."

They panicked. They were in such shock they didn't even think to speed up, they said. They also said that of course they've never been involved in anything like this. But they seemed fine, just a little bit in shock.

Again, we're confirming that at least four people have been taken to the hospital, perhaps one other in the car on the street. At least two cars involved on the street, and that's about all we have at this point. Still no cause as to why the plane slid off into the nearby street. HALL: That is Tony Frassrand, a producer with CNN, reporting live on the telephone from Burbank, California.

Let's recap for you: Southwest Airlines Flight 1455 -- Tony tells us 137 passengers on board, five crew people -- skidded off the runway in Burbank, California, broke threw a fence onto a city street, landing, we are told, just yards from businesses and a gas station, as you can see.

Five people in the hospital. We don't know the extent of those injuries. The NTSB, National Transportation Safety Board, calling this an incident rather than an accident.

We will keep you up to date as we get more information on Southwest Airlines Flight 1455, Burbank, California.
