Gunman Holed up in Pennsylvania Office Building With Hostages After Critically Wounding Five People

Aired March 1, 2000 - 1:57 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: Now back to today's shooting in the Wilkinsburg suburb of Pittsburgh, five people in critical condition there, a gunman still holed up in an office building perhaps holding hostages at this time. We just heard from the local police chief, Gerald Brewer, who gave a rundown of how all this began and the current situation, so we'll replay that for you now.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

POLICE CHIEF GERALD BREWER, WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA: The information that we currently have is still somewhat sketchy. Essentially what had happened -- I don't have the times with me right now -- but our officers responded to a call of a man shot at 1208 Wood Street here in Wilkinsburg. We responded to the scene and found a structure fire. Right after that we got a call to the eastern area services hospital, used to be Forbes Metro I believe here, that a victim was there that had been shot. As we approached that scene we got information that three other individuals had been shot, one at the Burger King who had made his way over to McDonald's, and a second -- or two others that were there at the McDonald's shot.

So essentially we had three people at McDonald's that has been actually shot, and one person at the eastern area hospital. As the officers were coming back from the hospital area, they spotted the actor running from the McDonald's, he fired two shots at our officers, and barricaded himself at the eastern -- I believe it's the eastern area services building on the west building -- West Avenue on Penn Avenue. He barricaded himself in there. We knew we had children on the third floor. We coordinated -- sealed off the area with units -- our units, the county, city police. We eventually evacuated the children on the third floor, got them out of there safely and returned them to their parents.

There are -- some hostages were released. The actor did have hostages inside. We currently believe there are maybe four to five more hostages inside. These patients, I believe, are in wheelchairs. And we have initiated dialogue with the actor, and at this point in time we are hoping for the best, and that's essentially what we have right now, and I can't take any questions at the moment, but I'll try to get back to you soon with more details.

(END VIDEOTAPE) ALLEN: So there you have it. That's the local police chief giving us the rundown of how all of this began today and how it has wound up with the gunman still holed up at a office building, surrounded by SWAT team members. The next news conference they told us would be in about 45 minutes. We'll find out if there are any further developments. Five people still in critical condition after being shot today by a lone gunman.
