Sunday Morning News

Tennessee Stands By Their Titans

Aired January 30, 2000 - 8:27 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: The kickoff for Super Bowl XXXIV is about 10 hours away and we've got the teams hometowns covered.

CNN's Gary Tuchman joins us live from the Titans' hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, where a win could be music to their ears.

Hi, Gary.

GARY TUCHMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, there, Kyra.

It's early Sunday morning at the Donut Den in Nashville, Tennessee. But it's not just any Sunday morning and this isn't just any donut shop. This is Super Bowl Sunday and Tennesseans are waking up for the biggest day of their professional sports viewing lives and this donut shop has an intimate culinary connection to the Tennessee Titans, their team that's in the Super Bowl. What kind of connection?

Well, we will talk to the owner of the store about that. This is Norman Fox, the owner of the Donut Den. Norman, tell me what the connection is.

NORMAN FOX, OWNER, DONUT DEN: Well, the Titans bought our donuts. They ordered 16 dozen for 16 weeks during the regular season.

TUCHMAN: So every week who comes in here to order the 16 dozen donuts, which is 192 donuts according to my math, a lot of donuts for 45 guys on a football team.

FOX: Yes. Paul Noska (ph) picked them up.

TUCHMAN: He's the equipment manager?

FOX: The equipment manager, right.

TUCHMAN: So why did they come here to get donuts every week?

FOX: Well, hopefully they liked them.

TUCHMAN: Oh, no, I understand that. I believe that. But the whole idea was that a rookie had to pay for it. That's a tradition on a lot of teams, right?

FOX: Yes, that was a tradition dating back to Houston, Paul said, that some rookie had to buy the donuts every week for the team meeting on Saturday mornings.

TUCHMAN: OK, now here's breaking news. What kind of donuts did they get?

FOX: They liked the good stuff. They got apple fritters, the filled, twists.

TUCHMAN: OK, now, one interesting story you told me is that one week they forgot, the seventh week of the season. The Titans were six and 0. The seventh week of the season they canceled their order.

FOX: Right.

TUCHMAN: And what happened to them?

FOX: They, the week they played San Francisco, for some reason they didn't get the order that week. So I was kidding them later that, you know, they were six and 0 or whatever with our donuts. But...

TUCHMAN: And they lost that game.

FOX: Yes.

TUCHMAN: After they didn't get your donuts.

FOX: Yes.

TUCHMAN: In all fairness, though, they lost two other games this season. They ended up 13 and three and they did get the donuts that week, those two weeks, right?

FOX: Yeah. That's correct. I mean and, you know, they ate our donuts and they're in the Super Bowl. So, hey.

TUCHMAN: OK. There's no donut curse then?

FOX: Right.

TUCHMAN: OK, thank you very much for joining us, Norman. Good luck to you.

One thing we want to point out before we go is one of the specialties of the house this particular week, custom made football donuts. We're number one Super Bowl AFC champs and Tennessee Number One. $1.99 apiece. Great deal. You might want to bronze them instead of eating them.

This is Gary Tuchman, CNN, live in Nashville, Tennessee.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: So, Gary, are you going to be able to expense some of those donuts you're going to get, undoubtedly, for the crew, you think? What do you think?

TUCHMAN: Miles, if you want me to expense them and send them to Atlanta immediately, we'll get it to you right away. O'BRIEN: We'll get it right through accounting for you there, a couple crullers there. All right, thanks.
