When you think of great skate spots, Addis Ababa might not be the first place that springs to mind. But Ethiopia Skate, a collective from the capital, are pushing the boundaries of the sport.

It’s become a way of life for many, and the group is gaining lots of young followers. “It started off as us teaching them… then with them teaching us,” one of the founders explains.

Social media has spread the word far and wide, and the international skate community has come out in force, donating boards and visiting Addis.

There’s plans for a skate shop on the horizon, and Ethiopia Skate are in talks with the government about building a specialist skate complex. It’s been a long grind, but they’re optimistic: “we just have to keep the faith and be patient.”
