Is there light at the end of the tunnel for Tiger Woods?

“Finally, I got something out of my round,” said a relieved Woods, whose miserable 2015 took a distinct turn for the better Thursday.

This season has been something of an annus horribilis for Woods, who has carded the worst round of his professional career, missed the cut three majors in a row for the first time and dropped to 286th in the world rankings in the process

But the 14-time major winner at last had something to smile about after shooting his lowest round for two years with a six-under 64 on the opening day at the Wyndham Championship.

Woods’ score of 64 comes 749 days on from his previous best round of 61 at the 2013 WGC Bridgestone Invitational – the last tournament win of his career.

The 39-year-old made seven birdies and one bogey in his first ever appearance at the North Carolina tournament at the Sedgefield Country Club and was satisfied with his day’s work.

“They were both solid today,” Woods told PGA Tour Live of his putting and iron play. “They were solid. It was nice.

“I was telling Joey [caddie Joe LaCava] it’s finally nice to get something out of a round, a round that could have been two to four under par, it’s finally six.”

“It was electric, especially early,” Woods added of the atmosphere at Sedgefield. “The people have been fantastic, so nice and so supportive.”

Woods needs a win or a second place outright finish at the Wyndham Championship to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs, which begin on August 24 at The Barclays in New Jersey.

The former world no. 1 started the week 187th in the FedEx Cup standings with only the top 125 qualifying for the four events.
