FIFA

Out of bounds: The Justice Department is about to deliver a body blow to soccer’s governing body. Up to 14 FIFA officials will be charged with corruption today after a three-year FBI probe, according to a federal indictment. Arrests were made overnight in Zurich, where officials had gathered for an election. FIFA President Sepp Blatter isn’t being charged, but he reportedly was investigated. We don’t yet know who will be charged. The charges spring from the FBI’s investigation into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup.

GERMANY ASSAULTS

Bad advice: Germans were shocked by New Year’s Eve sex assaults and muggings in a number of cities. Groups of men of Arab or North African descent preyed upon women out celebrating the holiday. More than 100 complaints were filed in Cologne, while dozens of other attacks were reported in Hamburg and Stuttgart. The whole thing has reignited the debate over Germany’s open embrace of migrants. And Cologne’s mayor is in hot water after advising yesterday that women protect themselves by holding strange men at “an arm’s length.” Pfui!

CLINTON BOOK

‘Cash’ clash: Explosive exposé or conspiracy theory? That’s the range of reactions to an upcoming book on Hillary Clinton that serves as the first major test of her presidential campaign’s ability to fight off attacks from detractors. “Clinton Cash” by Peter Schweizer alleges that the former secretary of state used her position to benefit foreign donors to the Clinton Foundation who helped it accomplish its philanthropic mission. The book provides fresh fodder for Republicans – especially 2016 GOP hopefuls – looking to attack the Democratic frontrunner on foreign policy. Clinton, her team and other Democrats are already mounting a campaign to discredit the book – and Schweizer.

EBOLA

Schedules released: Are you ready for some football? If you are, you still have to wait five months before the pigskin starts flying, but at least now you know who’s playing whom. The season kicks off on (what else) a Thursday night in September with the defending champion New England Patriots taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Other notable games include the Philadelphia Eagles (and newly acquired running back DeMarco Murray) playing Murray’s former team, the Dallas Cowboys, on September 20. Pro football’s nastiest current rivalry – the Seattle Seahawks vs. the San Francisco 49ers – resumes on October 22. And the rematch to one of the greatest NFC championship games in history will be played on September 20 when the Green Bay Packers host the Seahawks.

GERMANWINGS CRASH

New inquiry: Andreas Lubitz’s medical and psychological problems may have been worse than previously thought. Lubitz – the co-pilot of Germanwings Flight 9525 who deliberately crashed a plane into the French Alps – feared he was going blind and saw dozens of doctors in the five years leading up to the crash. This new information comes from a French prosecutor who’s opening a criminal investigation into the March 24 crash.

Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a few others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing.

WTF: It’s in the dictionary now, along with emoji, NSFW, photobomb and other words that used to be slang.

Acrobatic: It was a normal day at this New York park, then the “groundskeepers” started doing flips.

Just do it!: Dreams don’t have a chance to die around Shia LeBeouf. Watch him give the greatest TED Talk ever.

Windy beverage: Drinking a beverage in the harsh Icelandic winds isn’t easy.

Self-absorbed: One man decided to post 16 years’ worth of selfies to YouTube. Yeah, doesn’t make much sense to us either.
