Landslide trapped more than a hundred people

About 500 rescuers at the scene with senior officials

New Delhi, India CNN  —

Rescuers have recovered 51 bodies after landslides caused by heavy monsoon rains trapped about 170 people in a western Indian village.

Officials say at least 100 people are feared trapped under the debris after a wall of mud covered the village earlier this week. About 500 rescuers are at the scene, trying to locate survivors.

Eight survivors, including a child, have been pulled out of the rubble since the disaster, said Suresh Jadhav, a district administrator in Maharashtra state on Friday. He said the death toll may rise.

The landslides were reported around midnight Wednesday in Malin, a village in Maharashtra’s Pune district, near Mumbai.
