Pakistan's educational challenges

October 9, 2013 -- Updated 1728 GMT (0128 HKT)

(CNN) -- Schoolgirl and activist Malala Yousufzai is challenging the education system in Pakistan. After she was shot by the Taliban she became a key figure in the movement to improve education in Pakistan, particularly for girls.

According to UNESCO, more than three million girls are out of school in Pakistan, while spending on education has decreased to 2.3 percent of GDP in 2010. UNESCO also says for every 10 boys there are only eight girls in class and that poorest girls are most disadvantaged.
