A train rammed into a van trying to cross unguarded railroad tracks in northern India Tuesday, killing 15 people and injuring three others, officials said.

The people killed were all traveling in the van, said Suhas L.Y., the top administrator of Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh state, where the wreck occurred.

India's vast rail network, used by hundreds of thousands of passengers daily, has had issues with its safety record.

The country reported 93 train crashes during 2010-11, official figures show. Authorities say more than 40% of train accidents happen at unguarded railway crossings.
